Welcome to our second weekend recap blog. Here we will be picking one game per league from Premier League to Conference that involves a north-west team and giving you a ‘recap’ of what happened. We start things off this week at Old Trafford, where the red devils played host to Everton.
Premier League Pick of the Week – Manchester United vs Everton
Manchester United’s early tie against Everton on Sunday saw the red devils pick up a vital three points, win back to back games for the first time this season and propel themselves into the top 4 for the first time in a year. It was Angel Di Maria’s strike that put the home side ahead in the 27th minute. Everton had the chance to equalise through a penalty, but the usually consistent Leighton Baines was denied by an in-form David De Gea. Everton eventually equalised through Steven Naismith early in the second half, but summer loan signing Radamel Falcao was on target just moments later to secure both his first goal for Manchester United, and a win for the club.
Championship Pick of the Week – Wolves vs Wigan
Our Championship Pick of the Week was Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Wigan Athletic. With Wolves pushing for the play-off spots and Wigan on a poor run of form, this game was always set to be interesting as Wigan were tipped as favourites for promotion at the start of the season. In-form Wolves struck first as an unmarked Dave Edwards headed in in the 30th minute. Wigan responded rapidly, as James Perch and Marc Antoine-Fortune put the visitors ahead just before half time. Wigan’s glory was short lived, as Bakary Sako fired home in the 62nd minute to keep a point at Molineux. The result leaves under achieving Wigan just three points outside of the drop zone.
League One Pick of the Week – Chesterfield v Sheffield United
Preston North End vs Colchester United is our League One pick of the week. With Preston pushing for an automatic promotion spot, three points was vital. Initially, Colchester took the lead through Rhys Healey, but Preston quickly struck twice in 21st and 25th minute to put Preston ahead. Colchester managed to equalise just before half time but Preston’s fighting spirit got the better of them and Paul Gallagher and Chris Humphrey scored for the home team to give Preston North End a 4-2 victory which sees them sit in 5th in the League One table.
League Two Pick of the Week – Bury v Tranmere
League leaders Bury did the north-west proud this weekend as they defeated Tranmere Rovers 2-0. It was a long range strike from Kevin Etuhu which broke the deadlock after a corner was half cleared. Daniel Nardiello then rounded up the win for Bury in the 87th minute after he headed in from a corner. The win for Bury see’s them go a point clear at the top of League 2, and with 11 games played, they will definitely have their sights set on automatic promotion.
Conference Pick of the Week – Macclesfield v Forest Green Rovers
In our Conference Pick of the Week, Macclesfield hosted Forest Green Rovers. The Rovers fired ahead early on through Elliot Frear, however Macclesfield hit back twice in the 52nd and 73rd minute through Paul Lewis and Waide Fairhurst. The Silkmen looked set to secure three points, but a stunning 25-yard effort from Lee Hughes put Forest Green back on level terms. Hughes’ effort was the last of the goals between the two sides and now Forest Green and Macclesfield enter the next game week in 8th and 11th place respectively, with both teams with their sights firmly set on making the play-offs.
