I did something unforgivable earlier this year. My youngest son, then aged 7, has begun to show some interest in football, went to the Manchester City v Blackburn Rovers game. He sat in the Colin Bell stand with his Mum and saw a one sided-destruction of Rovers by a rampant City side. The Olympic fever that so gripped Great Britain was wonderful to behold, but the backlash against football quickly became as tedious as it was predictable. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to start apologising for the racism, the cheating and who was the racist on Twitter - that sort of nonsense appalls me as much as Twittering cricketers, drug fuelled cyclists and swaggering sprinters.
